Free/ Almost Free things to do in Honolulu

THE ALOHA FLEA MARKET:

No ifs ands or buts…go here first before you do your shopping in Hawaii. The
Aloha Flea Market has tons of stuff to buy. Many manufacturers and vendors
who cannot afford to rent space in Waikiki, sell their goods at the Aloha Flea
Market. More importantly, they pass their savings on to you. The merchants set up tents in the parking stalls surrounding the Aloha Stadium.

DIAMOND HEAD:

You can hike 760-food Diamond Head for a 360-degree view of Waikiki,
Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean. Enter off Monsarrat Avenue and park inside
the crater. Make sure you are wearing good shoes and take your time getting to the top. Most people carry water and a camera. Call 808-587-0300 if you want to know where Oahu’s hiking trails are located. Cost: FREE (a law was recently passed that allows the park to charge for entrance. They currently are not charging, but you should call to double check).

U.S.S. ARIZONA MEMORIAL TOUR:

The memorial has a visitor center, which chronicles the history and attack on
Pearl Harbor that killed more than 2,400 Americans and got the United States
into World War II. You can take a boat shuttle to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial.
Open daily 8am to 5pm. Cost: FREE. Tickets must be obtained at the
memorial on a first come first serve basis. The tour lasts approximately 1hour
and 15 minutes. Call 808-422-0561

NUUANU PALI LOOKOUT:

The lookout is on Oahu’s windward side from the Nuuanu Pali Lookout at the,
186-foot summit of the Pali Highway. If you drive you will have to take the
Nuuanu pali Lookout exit off highway 61. On a windy day you could loose a hat.

BISHOP MUSEUM:

View the best collection of Hawaiiana in the world at the Bernice Pauahi Bishop
Museum. Stop by the Planetarium and Observatory. Open daily except
Christmas. 9am to 5pm. Cost: 14.95 for adults and 11.95 for children under 12
years. Call 808-847-3511

HISTORIC BATTERY RANDOLPH:

Battery Randolph is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Built in
1911, the massive, steel reinforced concrete structure housed two 14” diameter
guns on “disappearing carriages” whose accuracy and range of 11 miles allowed
them to outgun any battleship then afloat. The Battery survived demolition
attempts in 1968 and became the home of the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii in
1976. Its unique construction and architecture are featured through exhibits and
adaptive restoration.

KODAK HULA SHOW:

This is one of Hawaii’s longest running hula shows. Free performances 10am to
11:15am Tuesday through Thursday at the Waikiki Shell in Kapiolani Park. The
park is located at the Diamond Head end of Waikiki. Call 808-627-3300.

ALOHA TOWER AND MARKETPLACE:

Ride the elevator to the 10th floor of the 185-foot Aloha Tower, the tallest
structure on Oahu until 1959. View downtown Honolulu and the harbor. It will
take you hours to stroll through the adjoining Aloha tower Marketplace and take
a ride on the Abner T. Longley Fireboat.

PUNCHBOWL CEMETERY MEMORIAL TOUR:

The American Legion hosts walking tours of the National Memorial Cemetery
of the Pacific at the Punchbowl. See Battle map Gallery and Lady Columbia.
Daily tours at 11am, 12noon, 1pm and 2pm. Call 808-946-6383.

HAWAII MARITIME CENTER:

Visit the Kalakaua Boathouse Museum on Pier 7 at Honolulu’s waterfront next
to the Aloha Marketplace for exhibits tracing Hawaii’s maritime history. There
are over fifty exhibits including Falls of Clyd; a four masted tall ship. Open
daily 8:30am to 5pm. Call 808-536-6373 Non-group rate $7.50 per adult and
$4.50 per child age 6-17years. For groups of 15 or more visiting at the same
time contact Carla at 808-526-0906. The group rate is $4.50 for adults and
children alike and include a private guide.

The Pier 7 Restaurant is located at the end of the pier. The restaurant provides a great view of Honolulu Harbor at the waters edge.

HONOLULU ACADEMY OF ARTS:

The Academy of Arts, established in 1927, housed a number of important
works. Open 10am to 4:30pm Tuesday through Saturday – 1pm to 5pm on
Sunday and closed on Holidays. Call 808-532-8701

HONOLULU ZOO:

Honolulu Zoo is the biggest and best zoo within 2,300 miles! (It’s the only zoo
within 2,300 miles). You’ll see the lion, elephant, and giraffe, of course, but
also rare wildlife like the Nene (Hawaiian Goose) and a collection of Hawaiian
marsh and forest birds. Hours -9:00am to 4:30pm – 7 days a week.
